The NEW Woman’s Guide to Healthy Aging. Eight Proven Ways to Keep You Vibrant, Happy & Strong
What women can do to lead healthy lives as they age

Toronto, ON It’s never too early or too late to start moving in the direction of a vital and independent lifestyle as we age. That’s the underlying message Dr. Vivien Brown, a family physician in Toronto, gives to women in her second book on healthy aging.

With the inclusion of a new chapter on women’s sexual health, Dr. Brown discusses eight essential areas of women’s health. A noted expert on many aspects of healthy aging she gives the reader the most up-to-date evidence-based information they need to become their own best health advocate and partner with their physician.

The top eight ways are sexual health, vaccines, bone health, exercise and nutrition, cardiac health, osteoporosis, immunization and disease prevention, and menopause.

“Women need information tailored for them, to protect them as they age, which is different than men,” says Brown. “Women tend to outlive men, but they’re at greater risk for dementia, breast cancer, and osteoporosis. More men have heart attacks, but women are more likely to die from them, in part because the symptoms may be more subtle in women.”

Here are just some of the eight ways women can thrive as they age.

SEX

Through a practical assessment tool and questions, Dr. Brown, offers readers a way to evaluate their sexual health including whether they are experiencing a sexual desire disorder, HSDD, that affects one in ten women. She also discusses treatment options that include new drug therapies and medications that may mitigate sexual distress and discomfort.

COVID -19 & TELE-MEDICINE

With the onset of the COVID-19 virus, doctor’s visits have significantly been curtailed because of the danger of face-to-face examinations. However, Dr. Brown says more than 80% of her patient visits can be successfully negotiated online and gives advice on how to talk with your family doctor on the phone or online during the COVID pandemic.

RETHINK HORMONE THERAPY

Hormone therapy is now considered an acceptable option.
More hormonal treatments are available today, including how estrogen is delivered. Dr. Brown notes a recent development called selective tissue estrogen activity regulator – STEAR. The book also discusses the many questions women have about hormone replacement therapy and the latest medical research.

This guide comes three years after the author’s first book on healthy aging. (www.awomansguidetohealthyaging.com)
